What Does it Say About Mom...?

As many of you already know, Victor didn’t start talking until he was nearly 5 years old. Thanks to the tireless efforts of his team, once he was given the tools he needed to begin communicating effectively, there was no slowing him down!

No long after he began his flirtation with speech, our entire family went out for supper at a local diner. This was The Boy’s first experience with having to wait for food to be prepared and served in a restaurant. Until that point, his only “dining out” experiences had been with fast food. As any parent can agree, especially those of kids on the spectrum, most times faster is easier.

So, as we placed our orders and waited for our food to arrive, everyone around The Boy was doing all they could to keep him entertained. One popular game he loved was “What Does it Say?” We took turns asking him what different animals said. We started with the usual suspects: What does a dog say? Bark bark. What does a cow say? Moo Moo. Then we moved on to more adventurous animals: What does a zebra say? Stripe stripe. What does a butterfly say? Flutter flutter.

Having exhausted every animal known to mankind, I branched out. What does Nanny say? Grampie Grampie. (Good answer!) What does Grampie say? Nanny Nanny. So far so good. What does Victor say? Mom Mom. Okay, starting to see a pattern here! What does Mom say?

Nag, nag, nag! Gotta give him credit for thinking on his feet. I guess.
