There's a Boy in There
Only a week ago, we were ready to give up. Our sanity, at least. This has been a summer like no other. Sure, The Boy gets antsy during...

Welcome to Small Victories Blog Page! Here we will share our experiences living with and raising our child who is on the Autism Spectrum.
Why “Small Victories”? Because each day is full of them. We learned long ago to celebrate the small stuff. To do the Happy Dance when he tries a new food, works on a new activity in his math book, chooses a book that doesn’t have anything to do with Clifford the Big Red Dog or the Berenstain Bears. His day, every day, is full of challenges that we don’t always recognize or register as challenges: the constant onslaught of sensory input, getting dressed appropriately, using his fork when he eats, remembering to pick up his dishes and dirty clothes. Sometimes we get caught up in the reactionary routines, putting out fires after they have started. Sometimes we need to remember to step back and look at things through his eyes, to see the world as he sees it.
Our journey is probably not unlike other families who travel this road. I am sure others have had similar experiences. It is a roller coaster of adventure. We have seen the highest highs, been through the lowest lows. We have shed many tears. Some from fear, some from frustration. Lots of them from laughter.
We invite you to be a part of our lives, sharing glimpses of life on the spectrum. Just as our day to day life is, this blog will be filled with moments of humour, levity, exasperation, frustration and grief. Because, just like autism, emotion is also a spectrum.
Feel free to leave a comment and share our blog on Facebook. We look forward to sharing our stories with you.
